The four-masted barque HERZOGIN CECILIE was the fastest cargo-carrying sail training ship of its time, built in 1902 on the shipyard Rickmers Schiffbau AG, Geestemünde, for Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen. Name giver was the seafaring enthusiast crown princess Cecilie, duchess of Mecklenburg–Schwerin. Length: 116 m, width: 14.1 m, draught: 7.4 m, sail surface: 4,400 m², measured with 3,242 GRT, crew: 31 men and 50 sailing cadets. Delivery and first training trip in 1902, laid up in 1914 in Guyacan, Chile, because of the war, sold to Gustav Erikson, Mariehamn, Schweden in 1921, stranded in a fog in 1936 off Ham Stone Rock, Devonshire, and declared a total loss. The painting is in a good condition. It was cleaned, newly varnished and reframed in a contemporary style. Signed and dated "1950". Provenance: major shipping company in Northern Germany.
